Grasshopper Classes (4 - 6 Years Old)

We all know that children learn at a different rate and in a different way from adults. As a parent, you would know better than anyone else how teaching children involves different methods from teaching adults: simpler words and concepts, and techniques to engage their focus and concentration.

This is why, at the Schools of Kung Fu Kingston, we run age-specific Kung Fu classes to keep lessons fun, interesting, challenging, and more importantly, appropriate to your child’s age and learning stage.

Our Little Dragons classes are tailored for children between 4 and 6 years of age, with a fully structured curriculum from beginners through to intermediates and advanced. We aim to guide every one of our students towards their Little Dragon Black Belt and beyond! After all, a black belt is only a white belt that has never given up!

Tiger Classes (7 - 12 Years Old)

As your child moves towards their teen years, they will encounter new and different challenges. As they develop both physically, mentally and emotionally, they learn quicker than younger children, but still in a different manner from adults.

This is why, at the Schools of Kung Fu Kingston, we run age-specific Kung Fu classes to keep lessons fun, interesting, challenging, and more importantly, appropriate to your child’s age and learning stage.

For younger children aged between 4 and 6 years of age, we have Little Dragons classes, while our Adult classes are suitable for anyone aged 13 and above.

Our Junior classes are tailored for children between 7 and 12 years of age, with a fully structured curriculum from beginners through to intermediates and advanced. As your child progresses through our grading structure, their concentration and focus will improve, hence allowing for longer lessons for intermediate and advanced students that involves partner and weapon work, all taught in a controlled setting under the watchful eye of our instructors.

The ABC’s of Life

Learning a martial art is one of the best ways for a child to develop their confidence and character. The dedication and discipline required to master kung fu will instil in your child the ABC’s of life: Attitude, Behaviour and Character. These traits are essential for success not just at home and in school, but in life. Learning these traits early will help your child develop into a mature, well-rounded and responsible individual.

We constantly receive feedback from delighted parents, citing a range of improvements they have noticed in their child since picking up kung fu:

  • Improved self-confidence
    Raised self-esteem
  • Higher grades and better school reports
  • Better behaviour
  • Improved focus and concentration
  • Greater respect for others
  • Improved attitude and a more positive approach to challenges
  • Transferable leadership and teamwork skills
  • An overall sense of wellbeing
  • Improved fitness, coordination and flexibility
  • Raised awareness of anti-bullying strategies
  • Effective self-defence
  • A greater sense of responsibility: a willingness to help around the house!

And the best thing about it all? The kids love their kung fu!

A Unique Approach to Teaching

All martial arts schools can teach your child how to kick and punch, but our main focus is on the inner teachings of kung fu: the development of sound mind, body and spirit. Our classes provide so much more than just the skills required to cope with physical threats. We believe that the biggest challenge facing a child is not an external threat, like the local bully, but internal. Very often, a child’s own self-doubt, fear and lack of confidence could prevent him or her from achieving their full potential.

At Schools of Kung Fu Kingston, we work on a system of positive rewards, recognising a child’s achievements and encouraging them to aim ever higher. By nurturing their sense of self, we get the children to recognise their own strengths, boosting their self-confidence and morale. We have seen painfully shy pupils progress dramatically, to the point of performing in public demonstrations in front of a crowd of hundreds of people!

Our class structure forms a strong foundation of discipline and mutual respect. The upbeat and exciting lessons with our focus on fun keeps the students engaged and eager for more. With our traditional belt ranking system, students learn to set achievable goals, and to appreciate the importance of perseverance and hard work in the journey towards their black belt.

Apart from teaching real self-defence techniques, our lessons instil in students important life lessons that will stay with them through their lives. They will learn courtesy and respect, patience and tolerance towards others. They will learn to have the willpower to say “no” to unhealthy peer pressure. Above all else, they will learn that they are capable of achieving anything with firm self-belief and a can-do attitude.

Equal Emphases on Mind, Body and Spirit

Since 2004, the Schools of Kung Fu Kingston has been teaching authentic kung fu to adults and children from our fulltime premises in South Croydon. Our focus on the ancient teachings of Chinese kung fu: the cultivation of the mind and spirit as well as the body, helps our students achieve more than just improved fitness.

At Schools of Kung Fu Kingston, we emphasise the development of the positive qualities inherent in true martial artists like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan:

  • Modesty
  • Courtesy
  • Integrity
  • Perseverance
  • Self-control
  • Indomitable spirit

Frequently Asked Questions by Parents

Most definitely! Bullies are opportunistic predators: they go for easy targets, victims they sense will not put up a fight. Children with a lack of self-confidence and self-esteem are prime targets for bullies. At the Schools of Kung Fu Kingston, not only will we teach your child essential self-defence, we will show them how to spot threats and to avoid conflicts. More importantly, we will nurture their self-belief and show them how to conquer their inner fears. When your child walks tall and proud and exudes confidence, it will make them a less attractive target to bullies.

Far from it. Learning to defend yourself will not make you a bully. Because we constantly emphasise the importance of personal cultivation and self-improvement over fighting skills, our students are taught from the start that with great power comes great responsibility, and that they should never use their kung fu skills except in self-defence. The use of physical force should always ever be used as a last resort.

Our lessons are designed to be inclusive, and we have students with a variety of special needs, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, as well as visual and hearing impairments. Martial arts is one of the best ways to engage these children, to help focus their energies, and to give them a great sense of wellbeing and achievement.

We understand the child’s mind set, and appreciate that they can have short attention spans. The most common reasons why a child may quit an activity are:

  • They get discouraged when they find it hard to pick up
  • On the flip side, they have a natural knack for the activity, but lessons are not challenging enough to maintain their interest
  • They fail to gain recognition for their achievements, either from the instructor or their parents
  • They do not get the encouragement required from the instructor or parents
  • A negative experience with a classmate, resulting in a need to avoid the issue

Our programme of instruction is based on a system of positive reinforcement. We make sure each child receives lots of positive feedback, praise and encouragement. Our upbeat classes and small instructor to student ratio keep the students engaged, and our instructors endeavour to maintain a positive, friendly relationship with each student.

Kung fu is first and foremost a martial art for self-defence, not a sport. Your child’s personal development is more important, not their placing in a competition or the number of trophies they win. We encourage all our students to participate fully in every class, and we constantly remind our students of our two main rules: to always try your best, and to always have fun!

Taekwondo (TKD) is a Martial Art which has its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks and fast kicking techniques. Taekwondo is a competition orientated sport where points are awarded for strikes. Whereas Wing Chun Kung Fu is recognised as one of the worlds most practical and effective Martial Arts which is dynamic but simple using an opponents strength against them, Wing Chun is first and foremost a self defence not a contact sport. The system is about evolving and not using strength to defeat an opponent in self defence.

To enable the fast kicks Taekwondo generally adopts stances that are narrower with the trade-off of decreased stability is believed to be worth the increased agility whilst keeping a distance from the opponent. Wing Chun Kung Fu has a balanced grounded stance enabling you to effectively react to a situation and to re-direct and opponents attached whilst keeping total stability. This gives you not only speed when reacting but also the ability to position yourself close to the opponent from a self defence aspect, to defend and attack simultaneously.
